Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas has revealed the creators of the popular show, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, are “writing something” new.
The coming-of-age sitcom ended in 2010 but was followed by two spin-off films in 2011 and 2014.
Inbetweeners creators are ‘writing something’ new for series
Speaking at The Comedy Rooms, Thomas, who played Simon Cooper in the series, said: “What has happened is that the people who wrote The Inbetweeners a while ago sold the rights to a larger entity, and they recently bought them back so they can make some more.
“I’m really excited. I don’t know what they’re doing.
“I just know they’re writing something, and I would really love to do it. That’s pretty much it.
“I hope there’s more because I’ve not got that much else to do. I do like The Inbetweeners as well.”
The new project could take shape in “film, TV and stage” formats.
Fans last saw the cast together in the 2019 special The Inbetweeners: Fwends Reunited.
Why did the Inbetweeners end?
The Inbetweeners originally aired on E4 from 2008 to 2010, following the misadventures of suburban teenager William (Will) McKenzie (Simon Bird) and his friends Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley).
It follows the foursome as they deal with school life at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive, uncaring staff, adolescent sexuality, male bonding, and more.
There were 18 episodes across three series, followed by two successful films in 2011 and 2014.
There is no obvious reason why there were no more series created, but the ending felt complete, with the films only adding to the story late.
On a reunion, Joe Thomas previously said: “I don’t think they could do another series. You’d have to be a movie. You’d have to have a very, very clever device for doing another series.
“A movie, I think, works with the right idea. It would be challenging to do another series, just because of the timeline. But with the film, there are all sorts of options.”
In June 2020, the content on its YouTube channel was removed due to the licensing rights changing owners.
However, last October Morris and Beesley’s production company, Fudge Park, signed an agreement with distributor Banijay UK to unlock “the rights and the potential to bring The Inbetweeners back for new audiences across a range of platforms including film, tv and stage”.
